Like all things astrology has it part in Hinduism., it is one of the six disciplines of vedanga (vedic religion). The word astrology comes from the Greek work astro, meaning STAR. It is a study of stars and planets and the their effect on our life.In Hinduism it is know as Jyotish. Litereally means light or flame. It also stands for celestial bodies. ( the planets planetary system)
Many years ago Jyotish was a large part every day life. And even today a lot of people still live their lives according to the guidance of Jyotish.
How much people believe in jyotish is a personal thing, but is also an art , it is very complex. I am not here to make you believe or disbelieve but like is said before jyotish has it part in Hinduism. Everything has it place and needs to be understood.
Jyotish consist of various things, Planets, constellations, zodiac signs, dasha, house, time and place of birth. A person who is knowledgeable in this art is able to forecast major events one life with a great deal of accuracy, but likewise some with little knowledge is also able to forecast but it has it consequences. So it is important to know who is making these forecast.
Ideally it best not to know the future. How ever it is very interesting how the planets and stars can effect ones life.
So how does it work.
There are several charts but the Lagna Chart is the one commonly looked at.
Firstly the chart is comprised of 12 houses. And depending on the time and date of birth, the zodiac sign that falls in the first house is considers to the person lagna. ascending sign. When making a forecast, this is taking into consideration. The forecast depends firstly the zodiac sign that is in the house and then the planet that is also in the same house. The houses represent various aspect of life, e.g well being , part of body, relationship, etc.

Graha - Planets
In Sanskrit the word "graha" means to seize or to grab, take hold of.
Simplistic view is that it means planets so, the planets take hold of your life. There nine Grahas or planets are called Surya or ravi (the Sun), Chandra (the Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru or Brahpathi (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (Northern lunar node or eclipse of the sun) and Ketu (Southern lunar node or the eclipse of the moon). The Sun is not a planet, it is a star. Rahu and Ketu are not planets, and indeed do not even represent physical bodies The Grahas are divided into two groups, “Saumya” or benefic and “Krura" or malefic. The Waxing Moon ( the moon moving from new Moon to Full Moon), Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are known as benefices. The Sun, Saturn, Mars, Waning Moon (the moon moving from Full Moon to the New Moon), Rahu and Ketu are classified as malefic. Graha influence each other in various ways. The rishis saw a relationship between the movement of the planets and the ups and downs of persons life. Vedic Astrology explores these variations in order to help us anticipate challenges and comprehend their meaning. And thus to help us live our lives better. The sign in which a planet is located is of great importance .Two planets in the same sign are conjunct. All planets have drishti or aspects. Or to put it in simpler terms they "look" at other planets and signs. All planets aspect the sign or planet placed exactly opposite to them, i.e., in the 7th house from them. This is normally called the 7th house aspect, or the full aspect. Apart from this 7th aspect, some planets have "special" aspects. Mars aspects the 4th and the 8th houses from its position. Jupiter aspects the 5th and the 9th houses from its position. Saturn aspects the 3rd and the 10th houses from its position. Ketu aspect the 7th and Rahu the all houses from their position The houses and the planets aspected by a planet get influenced by the planet. The effect will be good or bad depending on the nature, condition, lordship etc of the aspecting planet and also on the relation between the two planets. If the sign is favourable to the planet, the qualities of the planet are expressed more strongly and auspiciously.

To forecast a prediction for some one is very complex and should be left to some who is very knowledgeable. It is possible to know ones future but can you change it. Is it wise to change it.
We are all born according to our Karma, and grahas act according to there nature bringing about change in ones life. This is fruit of our karmas, whether good or bad and our karma will have to be full field according to Srimad Bhagavad Gita. So By all means we can make our lives better by doing relevant poojas and Jaaps to saticefy the grahas but the true happiness lies in Bhakti ( devotion to the lord )
Markand rishi was destine to die at age of sixteen but Bhakti to lord Shiva saved him from the clutches of death.
